11 Hearty Sandwich Spots in Beacon, NY
Ever since John Montagu (AKA “the 4th Earl of Sandwich”) invented the sandwich, in 1762, his namesake creation has been one of the most popular meals on the planet. In fact, today you can get a sandwich in almost every country in the world, and Beacon certainly holds its own in the sandwich department.
Going old-school
Perhaps the longest-running Beacon business serving sandwiches is the old-school classic deli, Mr. V’s (297 Main Street). A favorite of locals and workmen alike, Mr. V’s opens early to serve breakfast sandwiches including bacon and egg, sausage and egg, and ham and egg on a Kaiser roll. For a hearty lunch, try Mr. V’s Blazing Buffalo Chicken, pastrami, Genoa salami, or spiced ham sandwich. The Beacon Beacon happens to be partial to the turkey hero with lettuce, tomato, onion, and doused with oil and vinegar.
And if you’re planning to hike to the top of Mount Beacon, make a pitstop at Bob’s Corner Store (790 Wolcott Avenue), located right at the base of the mountain. Here you can custom order you own sandwich or perhaps try Bob’s Philly cheesesteak hero, which just might be the perfect fuel for your ascent to the peak!
International inspiration
Although not specifically a sandwich place, newly opened Turkish restaurant, Nilufer’s Home Kitchen (135 Main Street), serves lamb, braised chicken, stewed vegetables, and pan-fried halloumi cheese sandwiches all stuffed into warm, doughy pita bread. One bite of these delicious sandwiches made us feel like we’d been transported back to Istanbul.
Head a little farther east on Main Street and you’ll come to the super popular Beacon Bread Company (193-195 Main Street), which serves eggs with bacon, sausage, Canadian bacon, and American cheese on a roll for breakfast, and an eclectic mix of excellent lunch sandwiches ranging from a falafel burger on a vegan bun to chicken kimchi consisting of fried chicken, siracha, house kimchi, arugula, and Korean gochujang aioli on a brioche. You might also want to try the caprese featuring mozzarella, tomato, balsamic reduction, arugula, and pesto on a baguette.
No culinary tour of Beacon would be complete without a stop at the Hudson Valley Food Hall (288 Main Street) where you’ll find all kinds of international food vendors including Tara’s Indian Fusion Cuisine. Although sandwiches might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Indian cuisine, Tara’s falafel should definitely not be missed. The falafel itself is incredibly tasty and as light as a feather. So is the wrap holding it all together—made of chickpea rather than wheat flour. Perfect for anyone looking for a gluten-free option. Don’t forget to ask for the three types of homemade hot sauces that add a kick to the authentic Indian flavors.
The daily sandwich
Turn right off Main Street when you reach Teller Avenue and go a few blocks until you reach The Beacon Daily (29 Teller Avenue). The detour from Main Street is mandatory since no Beacon sandwich tour is complete without visiting this Beacon institution which seems determined to leave no nationality or ethnicity off its sandwich menu. If you like Vietnamese food, try the super tasty, slightly spicy pork or tofu Banh Mi. The succulent chicken shawarma on pita takes you all the way to the middle east while the Nashville Hot (chicken, Nashville chili oil, honey butter hot sauce, and more) can turn almost anyone into a country music fan. That’s not to mention the chicken and eggplant parmesan and Italian combo heroes, all served on crusty locally baked bread.
Just keep going
Back on Main Street, keep heading east toward Mount Beacon until Beacon Falls Café (472 Main Street) appears just as the street curves to the left. This cozy little joint makes us feel like we’ve stepped back in time to a simpler more downhome era. Owned by a Culinary Institute of America (CIA) alumnus, Beacon Falls Café serves a wide range of meat and vegan (veggie and Beyond Beef) burgers, paninis which include a vibrant grilled chicken pesto, caprese (eggplant, roasted red pepper, tomato, mozzarella), and a Rueben on rye that holds its own against any Rueben you might get down in NYC.
