A Teacher’s Tale

By Diane Lapis, Trustee of the Beacon Historical Society

A train station sign for Beacon, NY with snow on the Hudson River in the background and a yellow school bus.

One day while waiting for my kindergartners at the Austin Road Elementary School in Mahopac to disembark from their morning bus ride, I chatted with my across-the-hall neighbor and fellow teacher. “Where do you live?” I asked.  She said, “Well, you’ve probably never heard of it. I live in Beacon.” She emphasized the first syllable like this… beeeecon.  “Well,” I said, “I have heard of it because I live there too.”

It turned out that not only were we across-the-hall work neighbors, but we also lived across-the-street from each other, too.
