Mirbeau Opens Its Doors In Beacon, NY

A new chapter for this historic estate and for the city

Mirbeau Inn & Spa Beacon opens for business on May 8th, 2026.

Yesterday was an emotional one for Beacon locals who love the city’s history. That’s because the famed and long-crumbling 1859 Tioronda Estate—designed by Frederick Clarke Withers for Civil War hero General Joseph Howland and left derelict for decades—has been brought back to life as an extraordinary luxury wellness retreat right here in Beacon, NY.

After years of meticulous planning, restoration, and attention to detail, Mirbeau Inn & Spa Beacon (11 Mirbeau Lane) is officially open. At yesterday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony—which The Beacon Beacon attended—members of Mirbeau Companies leadership thanked Mayor Lee Kyriacou, Beacon’s Building Department, and the city’s Planning Board for their support in bringing the long-awaited project to life.

A Flagship Destination

Home to 72 guest rooms and suites, and a 25,000 square-foot signature spa, all set on 64 acres of rolling hills, ponds, and waterfalls, Mirbeau Beacon—just over 60 miles from New York City—is now the largest spa hotel and the flagship of the beloved, family-owned Mirbeau group. They also operate locations in Rhinebeck, Skaneateles, Albany, and Plymouth, MA.

For more than 80 years, the estate—then known as Craig House—provided relief and a sanctuary for physical and mental wellness, including to women suffering from postpartum depression, long before it was understood to be a common and debilitating condition.

Some of its most famous Craig House patients included Zelda Fitzgerald, Rosemary Kennedy, and Jackie Gleason.

Today, the property has been reimagined as a peaceful, romantic French-country manor house with ponds and gardens inspired by the Monet Pond Gardens at Giverny, near Paris. Mirbeau Companies’ CEO, Michael Dal Pos explained: “In reviving the property, we’ve preserved the irreplaceable historic character while scaling our wellness and hospitality offerings to new heights to deliver a unique sense of escape for our guests, whether they are joining us from across the street or across the Northeast.
